Fairfax/Manassas Criminal & Personal Injury Blog

When an arrest for drug-related charges occurs in Virginia, one naturally thinks of the well-known illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. However, prescription drug fraud can also lead to an arrest, a conviction and jail time. A person who is accused of this crime needs to think about how they will fight the charges.

A woman was recently arrested in Fairfax County for several alleged acts linked to prescription drugs. The woman, age 38, is alleged to have called a local drug store chain with a fraudulent prescription. The store contacted law enforcement when the woman went to the store to pick up the prescription. As police investigated, she allegedly gave them a fake name. She was placed under arrest for prescription fraud and giving a false name to law enforcement personnel.

Drug issues can cause major problems in a person's life and lead to them making a mistake when it comes to committing certain acts to get the drugs. A person who is arrested may, however, have options to avoid the harshest penalties. It is important to mitigate the penalties and craft a strong defense.

Virginia residents facing prescription drug charges need to understand all their options. In many of these cases it is possible to get the charges reduced. Courts are also sometimes willing to allow a defendant to enter a treatment program in lieu of other punishments. An experienced criminal defense attorney can recommend whether it is best to fight for an acquittal at trial, or seek to mitigate the penalties through plea negotiations.
