While facing any type of criminal allegations can impact the accused’s reputation, some crimes can be more damaging than others. For example, sex crimes carry with them serious penalties and consequences that could follow a person for years after serving his or her time. Thus, those accused of such a crime should take steps to assert their rights by understanding what criminal defense options are available to them.
According to recent reports, a 29-year-old man from Clarksburg is facing four felony charges after he allegedly failed to comply with the sex offender registry laws in the state. Based on preliminary investigation, police claim that the man was living at a different residence for several months while he was reporting to live elsewhere. Additionally, he apparently failed to inform authorities that he was fired from his construction job back in July.
Thus, this resulted in three violations against him. One for failing to update his change of employer name, another for the failure to update his address and the third was for failing to update his phone number. According to the chief probation officer, notice was given to the defendant that the state is seeking to revoke his supervised release.
The defendant was placed on the sex offender registry for supposedly sexually abusing another inmate at a youth home he was at for third-degree sexual assault. In 2012, the defendant was released from prison for the sexual abuse charge, which initiated his 50-year term for supervised release of a sex offender.
Having a criminal background when facing a serious charge, such as sexual assault or violations regarding the state’s sex offender registry, can be very overwhelming and life altering for the accused. However, a defendant should be aware of their situation and what defense options are available to them. This could reduce the impact the matter has on their life and their future.
