Man Faces Numerous Penalties Linked To DWI And Eluding An Officer

When a person is charged with driving while intoxicated in Fairfax County, there is the possibility that other acts that were committed at the time will lead to increased charges. Some of these can result in harsh penalties if there is a conviction. While a DWI is a serious act, those who are charged need to understand what they’re up against and prepare to lodge a strong defense to avoid long-term incarceration and other punishments that can negatively affect a person’s life.

A 22-year-old man was recently arrested on numerous charges including driving while intoxicated, a felony attempt to elude a police officer, an attempt to maliciously wound the officer, two counts of felony destruction of property and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute — also a felony. The incident began at approximately 12:40 a.m. as the officer, driving an unmarked cruiser, attempted to stop a 2006 Honda after the driver allegedly committed a traffic infraction. The driver fled and then is believed to have crashed into the officer’s vehicle on purpose. After the vehicle was stopped, the driver was hospitalized with minor injuries and subsequently arrested. The officer was also injured.

Any charge related to driving while intoxicated will be taken very seriously by the state as it moves forward and prosecutes. If there are other charges linked to these charges, there can be jail time, harsh fines, a suspension of driving privileges and numerous other penalties linked to the DWI. With other charges like attempting to elude the officer, physically injure the officer and carrying drugs, a felony conviction can result in an extended jail term and significant life changes.

In this incident, a driver who was being stopped for a traffic violation is alleged to have committed numerous other criminal acts including driving under the influence and trying to injure the officer. Given the penalties faced in these types of situations, people should explore their criminal defense options. By knowing their legal rights, people may be able to avoid harsh penalties.
