Man Arrested On Weapons And Drug Charges After Search In Home
When a person is arrested on drug charges in Virginia, they can face problems in the short and long term. Serious consequences accompany an arrest and conviction for drug offenses. This is why it is important for anyone confronted with these charges to plan a defense. These charges can range from simple possession to the intent to distribute. Often, other charges for weapons and violence accompany drug crimes and this can make the situation even worse.
Recently, a man in Virginia was arrested on drug charges after police searched his home and found almost $11,000 in cash, weapons and drugs. Law enforcement had originally gone to the 29-year-old man’s home to initiate an arrest on a warrant for assault and battery. The officer stated that he smelled marijuana at the man’s apartment. They were given a search warrant for items that were connected to marijuana including its use and purchase. They found marijuana, cocaine, a gun and other items. In addition, they found the money. The man now faces charges for possession and intent to distribute marijuana as well as charges for the cocaine possession and gun possession.
Drug charges might not be prosecuted at the local level alone. It’s possible that these charges are extended to the federal level. The punishments that accompany a conviction on drug charges will range depending on the level of charges. Those who have been arrested previously will generally be confronted with harsher penalties than those who are arrested for the first time. Also, the type and amount of drugs involved can be a important factors. While many drug charges are serious, that doesn’t mean that an accused person has no defense.
In this case, a man who was in the process of being arrested for a previous incident was found to have drugs in his possession with the alleged intent to distribute. He also had weapons in his apartment. Given the litany of charges he faces for these issues, he will be subject to serious consequences if he is convicted. With that in mind, he should protect his own interests by speaking to an attorney to plan a defense.
