Virginia Tech Football Player Arrested On Drunk Driving Charges
Law enforcement in Virginia does not discriminate when it comes to arresting suspects for driving while intoxicated. Driving under the influence of alcohol can lead to long-term problems for anyone, if there is a conviction as it can affect their driving privileges, result in fines and even lead to jail time. Those who are young, rely on their ability to drive to make a living or are preparing for a potentially lucrative future can be especially harmed if they are convicted for driving while intoxicated and accompanying charges.
A wide receiver for the Virginia Tech University was arrested for driving while intoxicated and for being intoxicated in public. The man, Deon Newsome, was confronted by police in the parking lot of a Walmart at approximately 6:20 a.m. before being placed under arrest. Mr. Newsome, who is 20, was charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor for the DWI and a Class 4 misdemeanor for the public drunkenness. Following his arrest, the school suspended him from the team for an indefinite period.
One of the most important factors in a DWI case is to formulate a strong defense to avoid the harshest penalties and secure one’s future. The term “protecting your future” is frequently used, but rarely put into the proper context as to its importance. With a criminal record for DWI, a person might have his employment prospects, educational prospects and overall future called into question.
With any DWI case, there are many factors that go into a potential acquittal. For example, if the traffic stop or testing procedures were not followed according to the law, the charges might not be valid and could result in a dismissal.
In the case of this young college football player, he was not just arrested, but was also suspended from the team. For a person who is considering a future in professional sports or would simply like to complete an education, drunk driving charges can severely damage these goals. This is why the first call that should be made is to a lawyer experienced in defending clients of these charges.
